Important. The vulnerability for the orphan girls regarding menstruation and consequences

Pictures and text from Wycliffe.

Background:
1. That many girls from poor families especially orphans in rural Kisumu from lack access to sanitary pads.

2. That the poverty cycle in Kisumu can be broken when girls stay in school.

3. Poor Kisumu girls who cannot afford pads resort to unhygienic and unsafe solutions.

4. 50% of girls in Kisumu slums engage in transactional sex or are sexually exploited to get money for basic feminine supplies like pads hence the risk of STIs and HIV/AIDS.

5. Alternatively, others miss school, sports, friends and relationships altogether to avoid
embarrassment from bloodstained clothes.

6. School absenteeism is a major risk factor to the education of girls in Kisumu.

7. A girl child with lack of access to menstrual products faces emotional and psychological stress.

Orphan girl with sanitary pads

The situation:
1. Making an emergency trip to the shops to get pads or tampons and found no shops or the money you have was too little to afford them.

2. Menstruation, a natural process for women and girls, is a big problem for girls in most parts of Kisumu causing a huge risk to their health and disempowerment.

3. Menstruation adds to the collection of reasons for gender disparity experienced by girls in Kisumu.

4. In Kisumu, lack of access to sanitary towels for girls means no school, no leaving home, no friends, no joy, no hope…sad, uuh!

5. To manage their menstrual flow, orphans in Kisumu  turn to anything like rags, banana leaves papers, pieces of old clothes, torn blankets, tree leaves, newspapers, corn husks, basically anything that can possibly do the job!.

6. Due to the absence of menstrual products for orphaned poor girls in Kisumu, a normal natural experience for females has been transformed into a nightmare or a curse as some may bluntly view it.

7. Menstruation is a private subject and taboo to discuss openly due to social and cultural
attitudes, hence the problems associated with it are swept under the carpet

8. Hygienic sanitary protection and reproductive health matters are considered a trivial issue for government attention.

Orphan girl with sanitary pads

Facts:
For a typical orphan from poor families, when there is no money to cater for food and other basic needs, sanitary products are not a  priority. Therefore, providing sanitary materials to orphans would be a life-changer for numerous reasons including hygiene, health, education and empowerment. When people are dying of war, hunger, diseases and terrorist attacks, pads are the last thing an aid organization or a government would think of. On average, orphaned girl misses 5 school days in a month; this means 20 learning days in a term. A year has 3 terms, this means losing 60 learning days per year. A girl in a local primary school who studies for 4 years would lose 240 days cumulatively throughout their primary basic education. This is about 8 months of school absenteeism within a period of 4 years. This fact also increases the possibility of dropping out of school.
Purchased sanitary pads
Solution:
Something can be done to improve girl’s access to effective, sustainable, affordable, eco-friendly and safe solutions. An innovative solution to the girl problems in Kisumu can be
obtained through sustainable feminine hygiene and pads to avoid infection, exploitation, shame, low self-esteem, school drop-out, exploitation and stress. Be part: Let’s make this situation better for the girls in Kisumu. The stories of the girls in Kisumu are sad and drive our passion to want to help. By supporting, you will empower and provide a girls child in Kisumu with quality, re-usable sanitary towels. This process will include educating girls on matters of reproductive health, self-defense, personal hygiene, and sewing lessons. Your support is a stepping stone to long-term solutions for girls in Kisumu.

New member!

We welcome our new member!

Thank you for making the efforts in helping the orphans in Kisumu Kenya. It is by the grace of contributors and donors all this is possible. But we do need more members to make all this be what it could be and should be. Now the pressure are on the shoulders of a few. Good news

"I cannot control my tears....we had nothing, now we have..." - Wycliffe

The condition is stable for the 6 orphans hospitalized in cholera

Good news! :)

The 6 orphans are OK. The drugs are working but they are thin and malnourished.

From Wycliffe:

"Uncle, I am still with the kids in hospital taking turn with my wife in watching over them in hospital bed.It is not allowed to take photos in public places in Kenya like hospital but i will be sending you much more photos soon as much i am done with stress of hospital bill, food, buying blankets and toiletries.
The bill today is higher, kids are in a stable condition but they are thin and malnourished. The drugs are working well on the but they need food to recover their lost weight. We are told by Thursday they will be discharged from hospital after paying all the bills amounting to 23,855 Kshs as for now could be by Thursday this will go up.This is the updates.Greet family for us.We love you Uncle.God bless you.////Wycliffe."

Contribution Maths

This math thing is bases upon the 'Likers' of our Facebook page.

About $60 is on the very precise margin what could cover food and sanitary items for 68 people in 3 days. $58-59 was the first amount ever sent to Kisumu Kenya in February 16.

Thus it is about is $20 per day that is needed and $620 per month. There are now 92 individuals liking Agaptivity's page - thus its workings - which means that a contribution of $6.20 per month and person would solve the food and sanitary issue.

But, since there are those who contribute with a larger amount it could be even less. At this moment 4 individuals contribute $153 together. Thus - if 88 individuals contribute with $5.20 the issue would be solved.

Observe, this is for food and sanitary items only.

Observe too that it is with very small means that you can make a real difference!

Make a difference - join our mission!

Information Update on Project Kisumu Kenya

Today I found out there's been a misunderstanding from my side (Ted). It is not 26 orphans that Agaptivity is aiding but all 64. And guess what? That is good news. How so? Well, all means sent have taken care of 68 people - not 30! The aid is including Wycliffe and his family. Thus, all contributions (big or small) is now, all of a sudden, more than twice as good! :)

My mistake was to assume that the other orphans needs where taken care of by the people they were living with. But the case is that they do live with elderly people and widows but their need is taken of by Wycliffes ministry at the orphans center.

So, when you contribute - you are helping 68 individuals!

Please help our mission!

Death is ever present.....Cholera outbreak. Orphans in hospital....

From Wycliffe today:

Dear Ted,There is a cholera outbreak and 6 orphans are hospitalized by yesterday. The bill is getting higher. No food for the remaining orphans and the situation is so bad. There is also cold and no blankets and bedding's. Pray for us please. Share this with our friends.Thank you so much Bro.Ted."

I sent out an urgent message on Facebook: 6 orphans hozpitalized with cholera! No food left. Please, now is the time to help!

Sadly, no response. Yet.

It turned out that 4 other kids in the village had died from it. As far as I know now, none of the orphans have died. That is however no comfort... 4 kids... Young lives.... Probably due to unclean water. Something that we - Agaptivity - wants to help out with. Wycliffe M. stayed the whole night at the hospital with the sick orphans.

I stepped in and sent them $57 for urgent medication and food. But that will not last for long...  I am unemployed so funds are limited. Please help!

Everyday heroes. An admirable attitude!

Hi everone!

Yesterday I was chatting with a cousin who wanted to help out. What made me happy in that chat was the attitude. As always we, Agaptivity, want to point out that it is not a matter of how much one gives or wants to do, but wanting to something and taking action.

Here's the attitude:
"so, I will at least try and help doing what I can do" :)

Well, one can't do much more than that now, can one?

That is what one can do and if you do that then you are a hero to me. What then do you think the orphans in Kisumu will think of you? :)

Act accordingly to what you can do. Donate through a membership and/or spontanious donations. You can also help spreading the message, linking and sharing on social media, sprading out flyers (these will soon be available under 'Information' on the Documentation page).

Hoping for your aid. That is what makes the difference.

Kind regards

$600 Challenge - Matresses, blankets/covers and pillows

On Agaptivity's Facebook page there is now an event - $600 Challenge - a challenge in raising 600 dollar. This is for getting funds for mattresses, blankets/covers and pillows - and shipping.

We will make an effort in collecting both blankets/covers and pillows but to be sure the needy will get these necessities we need to raise money in order to buy it.

To aid as soon as possible we intend to buy the following:

  • Matresses: Camping mattresses, the ones one use when camping. They may be a bit thin but the material do reflects the body heat. Today the kids sleep on....well, used clothes... on the floor...
  • Blankets/Covers: We intend to buy fleece blankets.
  • Pillows: Something simple just to make sleeping more comfortable
Why this and why now? Well, follow the dialogue I had with Wycliffe and you get the picture:

  • W - Always in April-July it is rainy and cold season here.So pray that kids dont get pneumonia. And because the shelter/center is still sketchy,it is like they are sleeping on the field..
  • T - Do they have any pillows and blankets/covers?
  • W - Pray for us.We love you so much Ted always and think of you. They dont have pillows, blankets or covers...they use done clothes,no bed and no mattresses.
  • T - OK. God to know. THAT we must fix.
  • T - A good nights sleep is important and....well, I have an idea and I will go about it at once.

[...]

  • T - Regarding pillows, blankets/covers and matrasses - do you and your family have that?
  • W - I have only once for kids and mine and wife but we need to urgently buy some bedings for the orphans.Chest diseases is what we need to avoid in them.

So, Wycliffe and his family has got one blanket... But Wycliffe's focus is on the orphans! Wycliffe amazes me....

This effort is of importance to både Wycliffe and his family AND the orphans. It is important that Wycliffe is in good health - who else will be the person to have contact with...?

Due to the means being limited for the organization this effort will not put aside the most primary and urgent, food and sanitary items.

Help us to not only aid in a hand-to-mouth manner but also more extensively and being able to planning forward. We hope you want to and is able to help. You can help out by signing up for membership and/or donations.
Thank you

Land donated

Better late than never. A while back Wycliffe told me he had got a piece of land. Here's an excerpt from that mail March 25th.
Secondly, we just formed the interim local board that comprises of 7 people (myself, one community elder, one person from Government of Kenya Children department, one woman from the community, one barrister/legal person who is also accountant, one person with disability and one child). Their work will be to locally work with me, monitor indicators and progress, success, growth impact and challenges.
We have also identified a land where we will be putting up a structure of feeding center and shelter for orphans and this land have been donated by a community member who is a widow and a member of my church. The land parcel measures 100 by 50 meters. All that we need is materials for building, fencing of this land, feeding utensils and 3 volunteer support staffs who will help in cooking and providing the services. Pray with us that that God will open a door for support towards this vision as we walk in God’s direction and guidance.

Thus they need building materials for the building and for fencing and also feeding utensils.

Sending this kind of stuff is not very practical. It by sending the means for purchasing it that we can help them now.

Have you signed up for memership yet? Join now and help them with your contribution. If you do not want to be a member you are welcome to donate!

Everyday heroes. " I want to help"

Hi everyone!

Today someone, a cousin, responded to a message I sent a few days ago to may dearest and nearest, family and friends. This was on Facebook.

My cousin (one of 30, if I remember it right...) said she wanted to help out sharing the message of Agaptivity's workings. She said she was going to bring it up in her sewing guild. There you go - all ways and contexts can open doors of possibilities! :) She said she was going to share at her work too. That was a great initiative. That made act on creating flyers and they will soon be available in English too and to be found under 'Information' on the Documentation tab.

How awesome with such engagement! I am so grateful. But I'm not alone. The orphans in Kisumu are too. And it is about them, the orphans. Yes, them and the ones giving. We, Agaptivity, are nothing, just a middle hand making all this possible.

It is YOU who make the difference. Make a difference. Become a member. That is an easy way to contribute. You can also, as a member or non-member, chose to donate on special occasions or whenever. If there is another way that you want to help out in, get in touch with us at agaptivity@gmail.com and we'll take it from there.

We're hoping for you!

Urgency. Yet again.... Fire put out!

I wish I could take of this by myself but I can't....

From Wycliffe:
"Brother Ted,I informed kids that you were on your way to surgery to fix your knees then they felt sad and some even cried and some started shouting prayers for you. With tears, this made me personally and my wife who were with me giving this information uncontrollably. They know that when you are sick then their hopes are closed. To me personally, when you are well is like i am unwell.Of late i have been very low spiritually with no motivation at all.It has been almost 6 days with sufferings and lack of food for these orphans and i don't know where to run to only to pray for God to bring a blessing or someone to help. When they are dirty, with hunger,no water and soap to bath and they cry to me i have no one to turn to only to share with you and believe on GOD.I get so much discouraged when they look up to me and i have nothing.Today will be the 7th day with nothing. The situation is bad.How i wish there donation comes on our way today. Our prayers for your family and Agaptivity. We appreciate the much hard work you are doing to change lives and thank you so much.Kids told me to greet you(uncle Ted). God bless.Shalom.God is good!/////Wycliffe."

I chased for money for a few hours. Then I stepped in myself to put this fire out and save the day for them. $58 and they are safe till monday or tuesday.

Solvatten - Clean water with sunpower!

Since we have one sponsor onboard we can now plan on helping out with water purification in a most miraculous way - with sunpower. Solvatten is a Swedish invention where you purify water with sunpower.

These cans are packed and delivered 6 per unit and each of them makes 10 litres of clean water. This will be a blessing for them i Kisumu due to the cholera outbreak. Now they also will not have to do with chlorien anymore. Besides chlorine is no match for Solvatten. Find out more about it here.
